My extensive work on the kangaroo industry in Australia has merged my interests in conservation and animal protection. Wildlife and conservation biologists are entrusted by society to look after the conservation of nature. Both nature conservation and animal protection are social values which impact the work of conservationists. Although at times these values conflict, more often than not a synthesis can be found between the two that can lead to better conservation outcomes. Along with local and international colleagues I am striving to merge these values into a coherent, theoretical and applied, discipline of compassionate conservation.

Oded KeynanMy research aims to explore the relationships between individual development and behavior, group size, and population dynamics in the cooperatively breeding Arabian Babbler (Turdoides squamiceps). I am interested in identifying what social or environmental factors promote group growth or extinction, and their impact on critical group size at the Shezaf nature reserve in the Negev desert (as part of the Arabian babbler research project). I am also interested in the interactions between birds and humans, especially the effect of agriculture and human settlement on the behavior and the ecology of desert birds.

Uri ShanasMy main interest in research is to combine behavioral ecology with conservation biology. I use my experience in behavioral studies to understand behavioral patterns in wild animal communities, and how these behaviors might be affected by human impacts. In addition to behavioral studies, I integrate reproductive ecology approaches into conservation issues. These two approaches can help in ameliorating a range of human impacts on wildlife survival, and on the health of community structures.

Noga Kronfeld -SchorMy field of research is Ecological and Evolutionary Physiology. Currently, my laboratory focuses on several projects, including mechanisms and significance of biological rhythms (both daily and annual), ecology of thermoregulation, and the use of diurnal animal model for the study of depression. Methods used in the lab span from field work to molecular methods, and we study a variety of animal species, mainly small mammals.

Yochay CarmelMy overarching goal at The Ecology Lab is to gain a better understanding of the complex spatial behavior of environmental phenomena, in order to end up with better predictions of these phenomena. Our research interests are very diverse, including (1) spatial and dynamic models of ecological systems, (2) long term vegetation dynamics at the landscape scale, (3) mapping of biodiversity using environmental surrogates, and (4) use of Remote Sensing and GIS for natural resources management.

Daniel RampI am Director and co-founder of the Centre for Compassionate Conservation in Sydney, Australia.
My broad interests are in landscape ecology, behavioural ecology, road ecology, and wildlife-human interactions. My core research is about adoption of the principles of compassionate conservation, a growing international movement that incorporates the wellbeing of individuals alongside other factors in decision making. |
Arian WallachMy primary interest is the influence of large predators on biodiversity and native-non-native coexistence. My research suggests that promoting dingoes is a powerful Panacea for a biodiversity decline in Australia, while controlling introduced species is both unnecessary and counterproductive. I have established The Dingo for Biodiversity Project, an initiative that brings landowners and scientists together to transition to predator-friendly practices.
